I’ve been focused on the Church’s potential for political and economic reform. This was a mistake. You could argue that the pope hasn’t promised to accomplish the reform—only to establish a proper foundation for reform.
I am firmly convinced that openness to the transcendent can bring about a new political and economic mindset which would help to break down the wall of separation between the economy and the common good of society. I happen to believe that people’s minds can be changed in this way, and that reform without this deeper foundation would be empty. I think we’ve been approaching it the wrong way around. This conversation needs a reset.
